Why This Project Matters

Water scarcity is accelerating. Over 2.3 billion people live in water-stressed regions, and by 2030, global water demand is projected to exceed supply by 40%. Climate change is intensifying droughts, depleting aquifers, and straining municipal systems. Yet unlike carbon, water has no standardized, scalable mechanism for measuring, verifying, and trading conservation benefits.

This initiative addresses that gap. By combining Sloan's IoT-enabled plumbing fixtures with ScopeLimited's blockchain-based MRV (Measurement, Reporting, Verification) system, we can generate audit-grade water savings data at the point of use. Each flush, each gallon saved, becomes a verifiable, tradeable asset aligned with the WRI Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting (VWBA) methodology.

The opportunity is significant. Google's Water RFI seeks projects delivering 100+ million gallons per year (MGY) of water benefits at less than $12,000 per MGY. Commercial buildings across U.S. water-stressed basins contain millions of inefficient fixtures. Upgrading them creates immediate, measurable impact that can be verified to ISO standards and traded as basin-tagged water credits.

This project represents the first scalable infrastructure for verified water savings, enabling corporate water stewardship to move from pledges to proof.

Project Objectives

Real-Time Measurement

Deploy connected flush valves that capture precise water usage data at every fixture, eliminating estimation and enabling granular, facility-level reporting.

Audit-Grade Verification

Anchor water savings data on-chain through ScopeLimited's MRV platform, creating tamper-proof records that meet third-party verification requirements.

Basin-Tagged Credits

Generate tradeable water credits tied to specific geographic basins, enabling buyers to offset water usage where it matters most, in water-stressed regions.

Aligned with the World Resources Institute's Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting standard

1

Identify Water Challenges

Map basin water stress using WRI Aqueduct data to prioritize high-impact regions. Focus deployments in basins with Baseline Water Stress (BWS) above 20%, including Google priority basins like the Oklahoma Red River.

2

Define Water Stewardship Activities

Specify intervention details: fixture types (flushometer valves), baseline vs. efficient GPF ratings, facility categories, and installation scope. Document additionality to ensure savings are beyond business-as-usual.

3

Calculate Volumetric Water Benefits

Apply the VWB formula: (Baseline GPF - Efficient GPF) × Flushes × Fixtures × 365 days. Convert to MGY for Google RFI threshold validation. Assign basin-tagged credit values based on local water stress.
